Voodoo and Audio Input Troubleshooting

Updated: 10 August 2026

The Voodoo driver ecosystem provides open-source kernel extensions for input devices (touchpads, keyboards, trackpoints, touchscreens) and fallback audio support on Hackintosh systems. This guide outlines the proper deployment of VoodooPS2, VoodooI2C, VoodooRMI, and modern audio solutions.

1. Input Driver Suite Overview

Extension Suite Target Hardware Included Plugins / Satellites Key Features
VoodooPS2Controller.kext (Acidanthera) PS/2 Keyboards, Mice, and legacy Synaptics touchpads. VoodooPS2Keyboard, VoodooPS2Trackpad, VoodooPS2Mouse, VoodooInput Standard keyboard input, Fn brightness keys, and basic touchpad scrolling.
VoodooI2C.kext + Satellites Modern I2C / Precision Touchpads & Touchscreens. VoodooI2CHID, VoodooI2CELAN, VoodooI2CSynaptics, VoodooI2CFTE Native macOS multitouch gestures (Pinch to zoom, Mission Control, Smart Zoom).
VoodooRMI.kext + VoodooSMBus.kext Synaptics SMBus touchpads & TrackPoints (Lenovo ThinkPad, HP EliteBook). RMII2C, RMISMBus, VoodooInput High-precision smooth scrolling, TrackPoint support, and physical click buttons.

2. VoodooI2C GPIO Pinning Requirements

On many modern laptops (Intel 8th Gen through 14th Gen), I2C touchpads require GPIO interrupts to function smoothly without cursor stutter:

  • Ensure SSDT-GPI0 is present in your OpenCore ACPI folder and enabled in config.plist.
  • Ensure only one satellite plugin matching your touchpad protocol is enabled (e.g. VoodooI2CHID.kext for Microsoft Precision touchpads).
  • Ensure VoodooInput.kext is enabled only once across your entire kext stack to prevent duplicate symbol conflicts.

3. Audio Solutions: AppleALC vs Legacy VoodooHDA

  • AppleALC (Recommended): Dynamically patches AppleHDA in memory. Delivers full digital audio quality, HDMI audio routing, auto-switching headphone jacks, and wake-from-sleep audio stability.
  • VoodooHDA (Legacy Only): Generic audio driver for non-standard or unsupported legacy chips. Avoid on modern builds as it introduces microphone background noise and kernel panics on macOS Ventura/Sonoma/Sequoia.
