How to Troubleshoot Black screen on macOS

Yesterday I installed Monterey successfully on a Mac Pro 5,1 with opencore with an amd rx 580. But I don’t know why the monitor I’m using keeps flickering black at random times, it’s getting really annoying. I tried changing the port from both the monitor and the computer and it’s still doing it, why’s this happening or how can I make it so it stops doing this? It’s weird because yesterday it was doing this for a while and after I put it to sleep and wake it up, it didn’t do it ever again for a few hours until i turned it off but today nothing I tried yesterday seems to work.

    Hi, I have a MacPro 5,1 (2012) 12 cores, 64GB RAM

    I have tried to get the HD 7950 GPU (or possibly an 8950, i have some doubts about the exact model) to work with macOS Ventura, but I haven’t been able to make it work.

    For your information, I also have the original HD 5770 GPU that came with this MacPro.

    This is what I have tried:

    Disk 0 – Initially, the Mac was upgraded to High Sierra, which is supported with the original GPU – everything was fine. I tried to upgrade to Mojave, but it failed, asking for a Metal GPU. Then I acquired the 7950, installed it, and the upgrade went fine. It’s been working for 4 years now.

    Disk 1 – I tried to install a newer macOS (Ventura) with OpenCore. I reinstalled the original GPU to be able to select the boot option. Everything seemed fine. I installed apps, patched OpenCore post-install patches. Then I removed the original GPU and installed the newer one, but it resulted in a black screen with no video.

    After investigating, I found that it’s necessary to remove the post-install opencore patches before changing the GPU. So, I removed the newer GPU, installed the older one, removed OpenCore patches, removed the older GPU, and installed the newer one. But the same symptom occurred: black screen with no video.

    I repeated this process – patch, remove patch, again and again – but it’s still not working.

    I decided to try: Disk 2 – A fresh installation on a blank disk with Ventura and the old GPU using the USB created with OpenCore. (After some reboots, I configured iCloud, completed the first macOS setup, logged in, etc.) After the first login, OpenCore asked for patching, and I answered NO. I then removed the older GPU, installed the newer one, and again encountered the black screen with no video.

    Now I have 3 installations on 3 different disks. All of them work with the older GPU, but only Mojave works with the newer GPU.

    I don’t know if the procedure of replacing the GPU during the last installation was done at the wrong step, or if I need to change the GPU between reboots before MacOS configuration.

    I’d appreciate any help

    So I got an AMD RX580 to replace my GTX 760 in my cMP 5,1. Booted to open core boot picker and the apple logo appears and the progress bar gets about a third in and then black screen. I booted to my other ssd that has Mojave and it works perfectly. So after trying a few things and making it worse. I decided to re install Monterey with OCLP. I created a new USB and installed it. First time it got stuck in a boot loop. I realised I hadn’t cleared the efi partition that has opencore so I wiped the whole drive and tried again. This time it worked! I got in applied the root patch and installed opencore to the disk. Happy days restarted it works wifi works and Bluetooth, although my mouse didn’t work at all during the setup part even plugged in via a usb hub, a lot of tabbing got me through.

    So I wake up this morning and put my HDD AND SSD (with the Mojave partition) back in bays 1 and 2 hoping I can grab the installers for logic and all of my audio plugins. And now back to square 1 about a third way through the progress bar it just goes blank and my monitor says there is no signal. I tried booting into recovery and I get the error in the pic. I have tried removing the HDD and SSD and resetting the NVRAM using the executable in the boot picker and nothing has worked. The system stays on but displays nothing and eventually goes to sleep. Any help would be appreciated.

    I’m using OCLP version 1.30 and I am running Monterey. Mac Pro 5,1 single CPU with 32GB of ram, boot drive is an nvme drive on a PCIe adapter. Saffire RX 580.

    Hey, I just installed macOS High Sierra, I mounted the EFI on the ssd and moved the kexts and things there, I restarted it to see if the boot loader is working correctly, now the opencore boot loader works but when I try to too to macOS, it boots normally but goes black screen suddenly (before even booting to macOS fully). I am using Lenovo x220 with opencore

    So I have a Mac Pro 6.1 (black trashcan one) running Sonoma and I have the problem that I sometimes need to unplug my monitor (thunderbolt) multiple times to finally get an image. Tried different monitors, problem persists. There are different scenarios however. Sometimes when I turn on the computer I see the bootscreen with the white apple, but the screen turns black and says "no video input" after a few sec, resulting in the computer being at the login screen but the screen keeps saying no input. Replugging it (sometimes multiple times) solves it.The other situation is that the screen stays black (saying no video input), not showing the boot screen when I turn on the computer and eventually when it's booted up it shows the login screen out of nowhere.

    I have no clue why this happens but it makes it damn hard to get into bootcamp when I need that for work. Holding alt at boot seems to be hit or miss. Especially when the screen just stays black.

    I have been using my intel i5-8400 with no problem then I decided to put the rx 570 when I try to boot it boots properly but there is no output on the monitor. While the screen is black I can just plug out the cdmi cable from gpu to the mobo and picture comes out and am able to use it.

    Hello comrades! After upgrading to Sonoma following MrMacintosh guide i have it installed BUT i have problem. After restart/reboot i have black screen on login with only mouse appearing. Anyway i can still pass this screen by pressing enter and typing my password, but this process is completely invisible, only black screen and mouse. Just like blind human.

    Hey there, everyone!

    I've been working hard on installing Mac OS Big Sur on my Dell Precision 5510 laptop, and I've made some progress! I managed to get Big Sur up and running, although I have no graphics acceleration. When I set the platform ID to 00001219, my laptop's screen goes black, but interestingly, when I connect an external monitor, everything works fine on the external monitor, including graphics acceleration.

    I've tried various platform IDs for Skylake, but unfortunately, some attempts resulted in freezes or reboots after the verbose log. I also experimented with different SMbios settings, but haven't had any luck so far.

    If any of you have encountered a similar situation or have any advice to share, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance for your help and support! 😊

    Here are my laptop specifications, in case anyone has some insights or suggestions:

    • Dell Precision 5510 Laptop
    • Intel Core i5-6300HQ
