just thought I’d report in with my experience for any others that might be resurrecting this great little ultraportable…
2014 11” Air, i5, 4GB RAM. I started with Sequoia and it was technically usable, but a terrible slow experience. Sleep and display brightness didn’t work at all. I reinstalled Ventura, and it performed excellently. I was curious about how Sonoma would fare, so I reinstalled Sonoma.
I was prepared to go back down to Ventura (even recreated the installation USB), but Sonoma ran really well after it finished setup. Disabled iCloud syncing for messages and photos, deleted all of the widgets from the notification center. Dock on the left side (16:9 and dock on bottom is a no from me), activity monitor on the dock showing CPU activity on the icon.
this thing is light enough for me to keep it in my bag with my 16” M1 Pro. Universal Control works perfectly. Perfect for documents and notes or any scenario where I would like a second monitor to show something for reference. airdropping documents back and forth, too… it’s perfect.
only thing I’m really missing from sequoia for my purposes is the window snapping, but there’s a great app called rectangle that takes care of that.
if you can get one of these 11” airs for cheap, I highly recommend it. usb c to magsafe 2 adapter completes the package. living the dream. can’t believe how well Sonoma is running on this machine with only 4GB of ram! there’s the occasional hiccup, but most operations are smooth (including mouse cursor and scrolling).
