Fixing Intense CPU Load and Sluggishness on 2012 MBP

Resolving Sudden Slowdowns after Idle Periods

If your 2012 MacBook Pro is at 90%+ CPU load at idle, it's usually a Spotlight indexing or Accountsd loop caused by a corrupted iCloud session.

The Fix:

  1. iCloud Reset: Sign out of iCloud and reboot. This stops the accountsd and cloudd processes from eating your CPU.
  2. NVRAM Reset: Essential for resetting the hardware state after a long period of disuse.
  3. RAM Upgrade: 4GB is not enough for Sonoma. Your system is likely Memory Swapping, which looks like high CPU load but is actually the SSD struggling to act as RAM. Upgrade to 16GB for a smooth experience.
  4. Ventura? If you don't want to buy RAM, yes, stepping down to Ventura will help significantly.

Original Question: "My 2012 Macbook is suddenly running slow and under intense CPU load."

I have a mid-2012 Macbook 13 that was gonna get trashed, so I swooped in and got it free. It's a dual core Intel Core i5 and has 4 gigs of ram. I initially used OCLP to put sequoia on it, but it was running slow. I ended using OCLP to put Sonoma 14.8.4, and it was running smoothly. I installed some music programs and vst plugins, nothing too strenuous, and was using it as a mobile production computer. It was working really well. I didn't use it for a month or so, and now, when I turn it on, the trackpad and keyboard don't work. It's super sluggish, and the activity monitor has it at between 89 and 96 percent CPU load, even at idle. My question is, what could be causing this? Is it OCLP? Can I fix it? Or do i have to start all over and step down to Ventura and re-install everything, which I would like to avoid if at all possible. Thank you so much.
