Overcoming Boot Freezes on Penryn-based Macs
If your 2009 MacBook Pro gets stuck at the Apple logo with a cursor during the Monterey update, it's usually a failure to load the Legacy Graphics or USB 1.1 drivers.
The Fix:
- Safe Mode: Boot into Safe Mode (hold Shift at the OpenCore menu). This bypasses the graphics drivers and should let you reach the desktop.
- Post-Install Root Patch: Once on the desktop, open OCLP and apply the Post-Install Root Patches. This installs the necessary drivers for your NVIDIA 9400M/9600M GPU.
- NVRAM Reset: If Safe Mode fails, reset the NVRAM 3 times. This clears any 'stuck' installer variables.
