How to Fix Login Screen Freezes and Prohibited Sign Errors on OCLP Macs
Using macOS Ventura on an older MacBook Pro (such as a 2014 model) via OCLP is highly stable until the system is forced to shut down due to a dead battery or if boot settings are changed. A common issue occurs when users try to change their 'Startup Disk' settings inside macOS or use ChatGPT advice to reset the drive, resulting in the MacBook freezing at a fraction of the loading bar or showing a Prohibited (crossed circle) sign on boot. This guide explains why this happens and how to restore your bootloader connection.
1. Prerequisites
- Hardware configuration: MacBook Pro 2014 (or any vintage Mac running Ventura/Sonoma via OCLP).
- Required tools: Your Mac keyboard, internal EFI boot partition, and an optional OCLP installation USB drive.
- Warning: Resetting your startup disk to 'Macintosh HD' without routing through the OpenCore EFI bootloader will prevent your unsupported Mac from loading the required driver modifications.
2. Compatibility Snapshot
- Startup Disk Mismatch: Unsupported Macs require OpenCore to sit between the firmware and the OS. If you bypass OpenCore, the native macOS bootloader will fail because the CPU/GPU drivers are missing.
- Prohibited Sign: This symbol indicates that the OS kernel detected hardware it does not support (which occurs when OpenCore is bypassed).
3. Installation Preparation
- Shut Down: Force shut down the Mac by holding the Power button for 10 seconds.
- Locate Alt/Option Key: Locate the Alt/Option key on your keyboard to prepare for manual boot device selection.
4. EFI and config.plist Review
- Re-route Bootloader: Turn on the Mac and immediately press and hold the
Option/Altkey. - Select EFI Boot: You will see a boot menu. Select the yellow/orange icon labeled **EFI Boot**. This runs OpenCore.
- Select macOS: From the subsequent OpenCore picker, select **Macintosh HD**. The system will now boot normally because the patches are active.
5. Post-Installation
- Restore Internal Blessing: Once on the desktop, open the OpenCore Legacy Patcher app.
- Build and Install: Click 'Build and Install OpenCore', then select your internal SSD. This writes the bootloader files back to your default boot sector, resolving the missing picker issue.
6. Troubleshooting
Reported Issue: Stuck Loading Bar at Login
- Cache Corruption: If the loading bar still freezes at 1/8th after booting through EFI Boot, the system cache may have been corrupted during the hard shutdown. Boot into Safe Mode (hold Shift while selecting Macintosh HD in OpenCore) to clear system caches, then restart.
- Stale Wallpaper / User Settings: The disappearing wallpaper and Firefox session losses indicate a hard shutdown memory flush. They do not mean your system is infected with malware.
Common Hackintosh Checks
- Do not use generic AI advice (such as ChatGPT startup disk resets) for OCLP systems, as AI models do not understand the requirement of EFI-level bootloader chain-loading.
7. Dual Boot and Advanced Configuration
- Show Boot Picker: In OCLP settings, ensure 'Show Boot Picker' is enabled if you want to select your partition manually on every startup.
8. Verification, Maintenance and Rollback
- Verify: Restart the Mac without holding any keys. It should boot directly into the OpenCore picker and then transition cleanly to the login screen.

Original Question: "Sudden problem with VenturaOS on my MacBook Pro from 2014"
| Ive been using VenturaOS for like a month on my MacBook, I didn’t have any issues before. Yesterday I was using it and closed it without turning it off, but it died so today I plugged it in and wanted to use it again, as usual. I turned it on and it was working fine my wallpaper disappeared it changed to dark Ventura one, and then to a light one. It might’ve been me deleting the file with my wallpaper the same to Firefox saying it couldn’t restore the sites I was using yesterday. The thing that started annoying me is that there’s always boot menu appearing, I don’t know if it’s relevant or not. I asked chat gpt (that was stupid ik😔) and it told me to go to settings -> general -> startup disk and chose this Macintosh disk and click reset - i did it, in the matter of saying there was only this disk I have a flashback of doing this before and there was no problem with it. What should I do😭 also, is it possible it’s any kind of malware? [link] [comments] |
⚠️ WARNING:
Installing macOS Tahoe on unsupported hardware is NOT supported by the OpenCore Legacy Patcher developers. Please be aware that numerous users have attempted installation, often resulting in serious issues including hardware malfunctions and complete data loss.
Also understand that OCLP supports over 83 Mac models! Just because it "worked" on one, does not mean it will not cause major issues on your device.
NOTE: You might have seen a new piece of software called OCLP-Mod. The OCLP developers do NOT recommend using any modification of the genuine OCLP software. Keep in mind, anyone is able to make a fork of OCLP (a fork is a modification of the original project). No other software is checked and verified safe or actually working on all 83 Mac models.
In closing, please only use the genuine version of OCLP. Do not install Tahoe until a fully compatible public version of OCLP is released. Thanks!
