Legacy Mac Buying Guide for OpenCore Legacy Patcher
Buying an older MacBook (2012-2019) in 2026 can be highly cost-effective, but certain models are far better suited for OCLP compatibility.
Buying Recommendations:
- Avoid Butterfly Keyboards: MacBook models from 2016-2019 often suffer from hardware keyboard failures.
- Prioritize Metal GPUs: Choose models with Metal-supported graphics (Intel HD 4000/Iris or newer, AMD Polaris/GCN) for smooth UI rendering in Sonoma/Sequoia.
- Upgrade Requirements: Ensure the machine has an SSD and at least 8GB (preferably 16GB) of RAM to handle newer OS versions.
Original Question: "Should I get a macbook (2017-2019)"
Hi, for some context, I'm a student who needs a new laptop just to use Word, PowerPoint, Excel, YouTube and listen to music. My budget is really really tight. There are a few listings for $200~ (MacBook 2017, MacBook Pro 2017, Macbook Air 18/19. I'm just wondering if you guys think it will suffice for my normal class stuff and if there are any issues. I'm definitely gonna use OCL
My main concern is overheating and the butterfly keyboard. is that really a huge issue. what's your experience?
I don't live in the US so anything with an M1 chip or better is out of my budget, and the reason I don't want windows is cause I had a bad experience with one.. All help is appreciated, thanks!
