Choosing the Right RX 550 for Native macOS Support
If you need an RX 550 for a VM passthrough or a native Hackintosh, knowing the difference between the Baffin and Lexa cores is critical.
The Technical Breakdown:
- Baffin (Polaris 21): This is the core used in the RX 460/560. It is natively supported in macOS because Apple used it in real Macs. No spoofing is required.
- Lexa (Polaris 12): This core is NOT supported natively. While it can be 'spoofed' as a Baffin card to work in a physical build, spoofing often breaks DisplayPort/HDMI outputs in a VM environment.
- How to identify: If GPU-Z says 'Polaris 21', it is a Baffin card. However, budget brands like SAPLOS often use 'recycled' Lexa chips and flash them with Baffin BIOS. Recommendation: If the price is $100, skip it and look for a used Radeon Pro WX 4100—it is guaranteed Baffin and low-profile.
