Legacy Mac Buying Guide for OpenCore Legacy Patcher

Buying an older MacBook (2012-2019) in 2026 can be highly cost-effective, but certain models are far better suited for OCLP compatibility.

Buying Recommendations:

  1. Avoid Butterfly Keyboards: MacBook models from 2016-2019 often suffer from hardware keyboard failures.
  2. Prioritize Metal GPUs: Choose models with Metal-supported graphics (Intel HD 4000/Iris or newer, AMD Polaris/GCN) for smooth UI rendering in Sonoma/Sequoia.
  3. Upgrade Requirements: Ensure the machine has an SSD and at least 8GB (preferably 16GB) of RAM to handle newer OS versions.

Original Question: "Is a cheap 2012 MBP worth it in 2026?"

Found it for just 50€, no hard drive tho but I have a spare SSD, not sure how much RAM it has.

I just need one for basic tasks, don’t care too much about battery life. How does sequoia (latest compatible version AFAIK) run on it? Any major bugs?
