Fixing Thunderbolt Display Glitches on 2011 MBP (Sonoma)

Resolving UI Issues on External Monitors

Using a 17-inch 2011 MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt Display on Sonoma can lead to weird Dock placement and window 'disappearing' acts.

The Fixes:

  1. Dock Placement: If the Dock is in the middle of the screen, go to System Settings > Desktop & Dock and toggle 'Automatically hide and show the Dock' off and on. This usually forces it to snap back to the bottom.
  2. Fullscreen Glitches: This is a known issue with the non-Metal graphics patches. Avoid using 'True Fullscreen' (the green button). Instead, hold Option and click the green button to 'Zoom' the window to fill the screen without entering the buggy fullscreen mode.
  3. FireWire: Sadly, you are correct. Apple has completely removed the FireWire stack. If you need FireWire, you must stay on macOS Ventura or earlier.

Original Question: "Upgraded this 17” 2011 MBP to Sonoma but external thunderbolt display is being weird."

Upgraded this 17” 2011 MBP to Sonoma but external thunderbolt display is being weird.

It displays just fine, ethernet works, usb works but the dock is in the middle of the screen and application windows often disappear mainly when putting into fulscreen.

As an added bonus, firewire doesn’t work anymore but I found out that its because sonoma fully dropped support for firewire :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated if anyone knows a solution. Other than that I’m having very minimal issues running sonoma on this mac.
