Creating a hackintosh disk image

I know there are paid solutions like SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner, but I'm a cheapskate.

Are there any alternatives? Can you dd using Terminal like you can in Ubuntu? Or could I boot Ubuntu off a USB stick on my hackintosh and do it that way?
