I'm an idiot and screwed up my perfect setup by updating El Capitan. Please help!

First let me get the basics down: Gigabyte z170 micro arc i6700k Gtx 950 with web drivers 32gb ram Samsung Evo 850 256gb Clover

I had been running El Capitan perfectly stable for almost a year. Then I was stupid and decided that while updating to sierra would be a pain, surely just updating El Capitan couldn't hurt. Genius...

Well after the update I now get stuck in a boot loop immediately after the apple logo appears. I have removed the gtx 950 and am booting with nv_disable=1

Running -v gives me the following screen then an immediate reboot https://i.imgur.com/QOLGCc6.jpg

Booting the recovery partition gives a slightly better result. With the same boot flags I can get this far https://i.imgur.com/zz9gVcM.jpg

Then after sitting for a few minutes this appears https://i.imgur.com/rX2Bn8E.jpg

I can move the beachball cursor with a USB mouse, but the progress bar does not advance. After 15 minutes or so it will reboot itself.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nb My windows installation on a seperate disk works fine
