Partition permission on MacBook

So, I found a MacBook in the trash years ago. A friend installed Linux. It's mostly a media machine, but half the space is inaccessible.

Debian GNU/Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64

He split the drive in half, leaving all the mac stuff intact. However, Mac OS won't run anyway. And I'd rather have the storage space.

How can I delete files off the other partition and use it for storage?

I tried downloading GParted, but synaptic package manager can't download it.

I'm worried I will totally fuck my system if I try to use fdisk in terminal.

I'm hoping for an easy solution, otherwise I'll probably just leave it.

Any ideas?
