Wanting to upgrade macOSX: i7-4790K, Gigabyte GA-H97M-D3H

Hello, I haven't upgraded my operating system since 2018. Recently I have been seeing videos of successful upgrades and I want to join in.

Currently my build is:

CPU: Intel core I7-4790K

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H97M-D3H

Memory: G. Skill Ripjaws DDR3 16 GB

Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250 SSD

GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 760

I was wondering what would be the best operating system to upgrade to and if anyone has a similar build is there particular issues I should watch for when upgrading?

Thanks!

iMessage / FaceTime & other Apple ecosystem features only work with VPN enabled

Hi everyone,

I've recently stumbled upon this issue on my year-old hackintosh (running MacOS Sonoma 14.6) where services like iMessage & FaceTime don't work unless I have a VPN enabled. Apple store works just fine.
This doesn't seem like an issue with my home's public IP being banned as it also happens outside my home.

I've tested with a VPN provider (Wireguard) & my own servers using both Wireguard and OpenVPN and achieve the same results: iMessage messages go through, my iPhone (iOS 17.6) DND syncs with my hackintosh, and I also get the calls and SMS messages from my iPhone on macOS.

I've also noticed a weird behaviour with Handoff: It only works one-way, from my iPhone to the hackintosh, not the other way around. I can copy files/text from my phone and paste it on my hackintosh and get open safari tabs on mac as well WITHOUT VPN. Other way around still doesn't work with VPN on.

I'm using the latest itlwm kext (AirportItlwm_v2.3.0_stable_Sonoma14.4.kext.zip), on a Dell latitude 7400 laptop.

I'm not sure when this issue started to happen, but it could possibly be when I first upgraded from Ventura to Sonoma a few months back. I can recall that it was working fine (without VPN) after following Dortania's guide.
As I previously mentioned, I have genuine devices linked to my iCloud account, such as an iPhone 13, AirPods Pro Gen 2 and an Apple watch SE from 2023.

Please let me know if there's more info I can provide, I'll be more than happy to provide it and get this issue fixed. Also, escuse me for any noob behaviour. Thanks in advance for your time!

OCLP 1.6.0 Nightly - Unsupported Host OS

Hi all, I recently updated to sequoia beta on my Hackintosh with a Broadcom chip. I'm using the nightly version of OCLP, but keep running into the unsupported Host OS warning when I try to install the Wifi Patches.

Everything else seems to be running just fine. Would love to see if anyone has been able to get around this warning. As suggested by someone, I tried running sudo mount -uw / to try and edit my build to something supported, but I keep getting the permission denied message.

SMBIOS: Mac Pro 7,1
OCLP: 1.6.0

Monterey on mid 2009 imac (help)

Hi, ive been trying to get open core to work on my mid 2009 imac for about a week and ive had a few issues. At first when installing and doing everything to book using a usb flash drive on the machine it would install and then get stuck at the apple logo with message reading "less than one min remaining" I would let this sit like this for 4-5 hours and at about 4 hrs when i pressed the caps lock key and didnt see a green light, i knew it was frozen. I got around this by opening up a (i think mid) 2015 imac and installing the ssd that was in the 2009 into the 2015, this worked and i was able to install Monterey on it with no issues, however when going to transfer that same ssd to the 2009 imac. it turns on and get stuck with the apple logo, and a bar about 1/3 way finished. im wondering if this could be because i only have 2gb of ram, or something in the settings of open core, if anyone has any idea how i could get this to work, it would be appreciated.

Installing on a computer with data etc on it - does it wipe the drive, or will it be like an upgrade install?

Assuming MacMini 2011/2012 iwth SSD running High Sierra. If I upgrade to Monterery or Ventura using OCLP - will all the data/users etc be there, or does the process wipe the drive? It's not totally clear to me from reading the docs. (I know I should back up before doing it).

Any common gotcha's or risks one should know about?

Thanks!

iMac Late 2013 27“ won’t boot from 3. Party SSD

Hi guys, I got a free iMac Late 2013 27" that came with a HDD. I had to remove the hard disk for destruction. So I disassembled the iMac, installed a third party nvme ssd with adapter and realized that the firmware is too old to boot from. The hard drive was recognized by the Sonoma installer I created with OCLP, but the installer with the grey hdd icon did not show up even after many attempts.

I read on the internet that firmware can only be updated with original Apple SSDs. Luckily, I still had one lying around from a 2015 MacBook Pro that I successfully upgraded.

So I took the damn thing apart again, installed the original SSD and finally I was able to install Sonoma and boot normally. Now I have installed the third party ssd again and the same problem persists.

I actually wanted to use the Mac for Linux, but even there, I can't boot.

Please save me from wasting countless more hours. I hope you can help me.

Need help with touchscreen (HP 15-AY041WM I3-6100U)

I decided to skip windows and go to Hackintosh OpenCore on BigSur, everything works like the USB ports the sd card reader but the only thing that doesn't work is the touchscreen. I tried downloading some stuff online but that went to a downfall as it didn't boot up again. The usb that I had was already deleted but I got the EFI back using a partition wizard. So I just need help with the touchscreen sorry for the long writing I'm new to reddit 😅

OFFICIAL! "macOS Sequoia and OpenCore Legacy Patcher Support"

Found this browsing Github and as I didn't see it posted here (apologies if I missed it) thought it would be of interest. It's the Sequoa support announcement for OCLP 2.0 from Mykola Grymalyuk (khronokernel) himself:

Another year, another WWDC and macOS version. This time with macOS 15, Sequoia, and a surprising lack of dropped hardware compared to previous years 🎉.

As the OS has been in developer beta for a few weeks now, we've compiled a list of challenges the patcher will need to overcome for this fall. This list will likely expand as we determine more issues with older systems.

  • Dropped Models
  • T2 MacBook Air and OpenCorePkg Challenge
  • Trackpad Support
  • MacPro3,1 Dual Socket Support
  • General patches needing updates:
    • Graphics:
      • Metal 31001
      • Metal 3802
      • Non-Metal
    • Wireless
    • T1 Chip
    • USB 1.1
  • Overall timeline for support

Dropped Models

One of the most tame OS releases since macOS Catalina, currently only 2 Macs were dropped:

MacBookAir8,1: MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018) MacBookAir8,2: MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2019)

T2 MacBook Air and OpenCorePkg Challenge

The current biggest issue we face with supporting the MacBookAir8,x (2018/19) series is the T2 chip's lack of communication when booted through OpenCorePkg.

What happens when one of these units boots through OpenCorePkg is that AppleKeyStore.kext panics due to timeouts with the T2 chip:

"AppleKeyStore":3212:0: sks timeout strike 18 "AppleKeyStore":3212:0: sks timeout strike 19 "AppleKeyStore":3212:0: sks timeout strike 20 panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff801cd12509): "AppleSEPManager panic for "AppleKeyStore": sks request timeout" u/AppleSEPManagerIntel.cpp:809

This affects not only macOS Sequoia, but macOS Ventura and Sonoma are confirmed to have the same issue. Thus an underlying problem with the MacBookAir8,x's firmware where it is not happy with OpenCorePkg.

We currently do not have any leads on what exactly breaks the T2.

Trackpad Support

Certain Force Touch Trackpads lost support in macOS Sequoia, namely those used by unsupported Macs. The primary issue is simply the loss of identifiers to match onto older hardware.

For most hardware, this has been resolved with the following commit:

MacPro3,1 Dual Socket Support

Currently on macOS Sequoia, MacPro3,1 (2008) fails to boot due to a CPU panic:

processor_boot(): missing for cpu 4 u/processor.c:876

This is due to the dual socket nature of the machine, and likely some firmware/ACPI table incompatibility. Temporary solution is to use cpus=4 boot argument (limiting to single socket), proper solution is currently unknown.

General patches needing updates

The following patches have broken either partially or entirely. This will require additional work to properly identify issues and solutions:

  • Graphics:
    • Metal 31001
      • Intel Broadwell and Skylake
      • AMD legacy GCN, and modern GCN on non-AVX2.0
    • Metal 3802
      • Intel Ivy Bridge and Haswell
      • Nvidia Kepler
    • Non-Metal
      • Intel Iron Lake and Sandy Bridge
      • AMD TeraScale
      • Nvidia Tesla and Web Drivers
  • Wireless
  • T1 Chip
  • USB 1.1

Overall timeline for support

As with every year, we cannot promise when support with be added. However following previous years' predictions, we hope for winter 2024 with OpenCore Legacy Patcher v2.0.0.

Development has been going strong internally and we hope everyone's excited!

For those watching development closely, know there will be a lack of commits for the month of July. This is primarily due to some scheduled surgeries for myself, and other members will be focusing on their amazing research and patch development. Thus the Python patching frontend and likely PatcherSupportPkg will be quiet. We hope to resume commits in August!

Mac OS Ventura on mid 2012 MacBook Pro

When using safari, the screen goes blank in the Internet browser. If I click out of the screen, I can still operate the scroll on my mouse since I’m using an HP mouse to see what I am looking at. The moment I click on the screen again of the Safari Internet browser it goes blank. Anyone run across this before. It’s kind of annoying, but I can live with it. It’s not my daily driver.

Flashing folder icon?

I have a Late 2013 iMac given to me by a family friend. I get to the boot selection screen fine and select efi boot. It starts and loads for a bit and gets to a screen where the apple logo is there and a bar at the bottom that says “about 29 minutes remaining”. It counts down for about 10 minutes or so then goes black and has a flashing folder icon in the middle of the screen and “support.apple.com/mac/startup” at the bottom.

Trying to upgrade to Sonoma.

Any ideas?
