Lack of Sound issue - Extensions folder to blame?

I installed Sierra on my newer Lenovo E540. I have it at work with me now and have been messing around with it. Yesterday I got sound working, but since I brought it home it hasn't worked at all.

Based on the Lenovo support page for the E540, the audio is a Conexant CX20751 type. Based on the findings on this github page, it shows the audio layout is 3. I had it as 2, changed my config.plist file so that the audio layout was 3, saved and rebooted, and it was fine. At that point I had "Digital-out (HDMI)" audio output available, headphone output and more. When I got it home and hooked it up to my Zalman USB 5.1 audio external soundcard, the normal on-board audio options had disappeared and I only have the "Digital-out (HDMI)" Selection available.

Now I've also read conflicting stories of where kexts should be placed. I had a Realtek8111 kext and an IntelMausiEthernet in the EFI/Clover/kexts/other folder, and removing the offending IntelMausiEthernet kext helped the laptop shut down fully instead of simply restarting when "Shut Down" was selected. I've had Battery kexts and others put ther as a thread by RehabMan on tonymacx86 advised against putting everything in the 10.12 or "Other" folder contained in EFI/Clover/kexts". However a Redditor suggested exposing the Systems/Extensions folder and putting things there too.

So I have a folder I downloaded called "AppleHDA-276.26-Conexant_CX20752" with the enclosed file "AppleHDA.kext". Where should I be putting this? It's already in my EFI/Clover/kexts/Other folder. Should I continue using Kext Wizard where I'll place it, rebuild it, then restart my Hackbook as always, or place it in the exposed System/Extensions folder instead? Is there a guide for which kexts should go to which folders? Thank you.
