8i7BEH vs. Mac mini i5

I'm scouting for a new Mac to supplant and supplement my 2011 MacBook Air. But looking at the relative performance parity and cheap price for the Intel 8i7BEH NUC compared to the Mini had me thinking I'd might get my first Hackintosh instead.

I'm a complete novice however, though I don't fear following guides and the like. But I thought I'd ask a few questions to the NUC Hackintoshers around here.

  • Would you say that the experience is solid once set up?
  • Would you say that even novices would be able to with the tools and guides at hand?
  • Does eGPU, Messages, etc work? (I understand handoff and wireless doesn't, which is alright to me)
  • How's the cooling fan on the NUC? Decent quality and silent?

All in all I like the concept of using a NUC+eGPU Hackintosh build as my primary. But I have money either for a Mac Mini or a NUC, so buying a NUC for shits and giggles is sadly not something I'm comfortable doing. I did see a few good threads over at Tonymacx86 with install guides and happy users though, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

P.S. For those interested in my use cases, it's primarily going to be Logic Pro, Office/iWorks, and some gaming (Elder Scrolls, Deus Ex, and the like). The gaming bit might be done through dual-booting Windows. I haven't quite decided on the best course of action yet.
