Z390 DESIGNARE + i9 9900K + Vega 64

Z390 DESIGNARE + i9 9900K + Vega 64

Not the nicest setup, but it's mine :)

Parts List

  • CPU: Intel i9 9900K
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 DESIGNARE
  • GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX Vega 64 8GB
  • RAM: 2x 16GB Kingston HyperX 2666MHz
  • Case: Fractal Design Define R6
  • Extras: Blackmagic Decklink 4K Extreme 12G, NZXT Internal USB hub

Working

  • All case and motherboard USB 2 and 3 ports* iGPU (I think)* Dual Gigabit Ethernet* Both onboard Thunderbolt 3/USB 3.1 (*not tested yet, hotswapping isn't supposed to work*)* Internal case USB hub* 5 SATA HDDs + 1 NVMe* 3 Dell P2214H displays via GPU's DisplayPort (*1 vertical monitor patched to rotate properly on boot*)

Not working

  • Intel CNVi WiFi+Bluetooth card (*could switch out for a BCM94331CD I have, but I don't really need WiFi+Bluetooth in macOS*)* Occasional "couldn't allocate runtime area" problem on boot - solved by restarting the computer (*looking into eliminating this altogether*)* "About This Mac" Unknown CPU (*looking into fixing this not just cosmetically*)

I initially was going to do a build using a Titan Ridge AIC on a Z390 UD board, but I read about how the VRMs on the UD were barely passable for supporting the 9900K, so I decided to upgrade the motherboard. I still own both of those and do intend trying to see if I can get the card to work with the Z390 chipset along with hotswap once I save up for some more RAM and another CPU. I plan on consulting [this guide](https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/331658-how-to-build-your-own-imac-pro-successful-buildextended-guide/).

~~While I haven't been seeing any places this build has been falling short, I am a little concerned that my CPU shows up in IORegistryExplorer under "PR" instead of "CPU". If anyone has any information about this, sharing it would be much appreciated!~~ [This is apparently normal for Coffee Lake.](https://www.reddit.com/r/hackintosh/comments/aicl6n/pr0_instead_of_cpu0_in_ioregistryexplorer/eemx16p)

Thank you to all previous OPs who've documented their work and consequently made this build almost problem-free!
