macOS VM can't use virtual distributed switch ports?

Is that a thing? I ran the unlocker script on my hosts, rebooted them, etc. created a macOS VM, installed the OS, but then found that I can't connect the VM to the vds port group. As a test, I created a dummy port group on a standard switch and it connects just fine, albeit without an IP address (because there's no physical uplink). I really don't want to have to create standard switches AND distributed switches on my hosts.
