So here’s a quick breakdown of my situation:
- Slightly aged but capable build (Z170X-UD5-TH/6700k/GTX 980Ti/GTX 950, vanilla HS install)
- Does iOS development for a living
- Often plays WoW under macOS
- Triple boots for hobbyist development and VR
- Considering getting back into making stuff with Blender (which would benefit from OpenCL)
I really, REALLY want to be running Catalina when it drops, not only so I can do SwiftUI work without falling back to my MacBook, but also because Xcode historically only supports the 1 release older than current, which means by running High Sierra (which I’m tied to thanks to my Nvidia cards) I’m stuck on an obsolete version of Xcode.
Along with macOS, Linux has better support for AMD these days too, which strongly pushes me towards AMD. The question is do I just put up High Sierra for some undetermined period until macOS gains Navi support or do I buy a used VII (which can be found used at about a ~$50 premium over a brand new 5700XT)? There’s other AMD cards available, but at least for my primary card I want something that’s both a substantial upgrade over my 980Ti and reasonably future proof.
Anybody with thoughts/experience on the matter? VII owners, how has your card treated you?
