Messages not updating properly

I have a mid 2012 15” MBP on sequoia, runs great, no issues with pretty much anything except for iMessage. I can receive and send messages no problem but it will not update to show that they are read, I have to go through every conversation manually and click on them for it to show as read on my laptop
