Is it worth installing OCLP to external SSD or 2nd partition & dual boot for testing?

Or just format internal SSD and install OCLP and a newer macOS like most people do and hope for the best?

Mid 2014 MBP 16GB, 2GB NVIDIA running Big Sur. Trying to figure out if I should install Sequoia or Sonoma and what will run the best on my machine and be most stable. Thanks.
