MBP 12.0 os X mountain lion to newer update help

Hey all i just bought a mbp 12.0 and have factory reset it. How ever i want to use this computer for school work and believe that i need a newer software system to do so. I called apple and they said this version is obsolete so im looking into lynix or windows. Idk how to do this so any help would be greatly appreciated
