I've heard for a while that Sonoma is better than Sequoia on some models in terms of performance and overall usability but I upgraded my 2016 12" MacBook to Sequoia early on.
It's been useable but often very slow. So today I tried replacing it with Sonoma instead.
I ran Geekbench 6 and it showed a fair bit lower score than it did when I had ran it on Sequoia, but nevertheless with Sequoia I was barely able to multitask. With Sonoma, I am multitasking without much issue and with minimal lag.
I think I'll be staying on Sonoma for the time being as a result.
Just wanted to share this experience with folks.
EDIT: 12" MacBook (1.1 GHz m3 CPU; 8 GB RAM)
