Are OCLP Background Login Items Normal on macOS Sonoma & Can You Run Sequoia on a 2015 MBP?

Tutorial: Managing OCLP Login Items & Sequoia Upgrade Compatibility

If you've recently upgraded your mid-2015 MacBook Pro to macOS Sonoma using OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP), here are answers to your questions regarding background items and future upgrades.

1. Understanding OCLP Background/Login Items

Yes, seeing OCLP-related items in your Login Items / Background Tasks is completely normal and expected. These items include:

  • OpenCore-Patcher: Checks for OCLP updates and ensures your system bootloader matches the version of the patcher.
  • OCLP Helper / Background Daemon: Manages background tasks such as automatically prompting you to re-apply Root Patches after macOS system updates.

Do not disable or delete these items. Disabling them can prevent your Mac from installing critical hardware driver updates or warning you when patches are broken.

2. Is macOS Sequoia a Realistic Option on a 2015 MBP?

Yes, macOS Sequoia is fully supported on your mid-2015 MacBook Pro 15" (MacBookPro11,4 or 11,5) via OCLP. However, consider the following:

  1. Performance: Sonoma is currently more mature and stable. Sequoia introduces heavy background tasks (like Apple Intelligence frameworks) which can increase heat and battery consumption on 2015 Intel CPUs.
  2. Wi-Fi: Sequoia dropped native Broadcom wireless card drivers. While OCLP root patches restore Wi-Fi, some users experience minor connection drops compared to the stable stack on Sonoma.
  3. Recommendation: If Sonoma is running "surprisingly well" with good battery life, we highly recommend staying on Sonoma for now. As OCLP patches for Sequoia mature, you can upgrade later.

Original Question: "Surprisingly Good Sonoma Experience on My 2015 MBP — Normal OCLP Login Items?"

Surprisingly Good Sonoma Experience on My 2015 MBP — Normal OCLP Login Items?

First time using OCLP and I'm honestly impressed.
I just upgraded my mid-2015 MacBook Pro 15" (2.2GHz i7, 16GB RAM, Intel Iris Pro 1536MB) from Monterey to Sonoma. The installation process went surprisingly smoothly and everything seems to be working well so far.

Maybe it's just me, but battery life actually seems a bit better than it was on Monterey. I was expecting some compromises, but so far the experience has been better than anticipated.

One thing I noticed after the upgrade is that I now have these two login/background items showing up (see screenshot). Are these normal OCLP-related items, or is there anything I should be concerned about?

Also, from what I understand Sonoma is nearing the end of its security update lifecycle. For those of you running OCLP on similar hardware, is Sequoia a realistic option on a 2015 15" MBP, or is that pushing things too far? I'd like to keep this machine going for a few more years if possible and continue receiving security updates for as long as practical.

Would love to hear from anyone running Sonoma or Sequoia on a similar machine and what your experience has been.
