High Sierra VMWare NIC Issues

I built a stable High Sierra image on my Intel laptop with the intention of having a VM on my AMD Ryzen desktop (mostly for Photos and iMessage as I upgraded to this machine from a trashcan Mac Pro but otherwise am deep in the Apple ecosystem). Everything works on the laptop, USB, Ethernet, etc.

I created a copy of the HD image, installed the Ryzen compatible kernel from over at InsanelyMac, and copied it to my desktop. Booted perfectly, but I don't have ethernet. There isn't even an NIC detected within High Sierra.

I'm using VMWare Workstation 14, with the unlocker applied, and have changed no VM settings from laptop to desktop (the only change is the kernel). Does VMWare use different NICs depending on the host machine? I'd always assumed it emulated the same virtual hardware (aside from CPU, like graphics and ethernet) but is that not the case?

I didn't really want to ask this in a VMWare sub as I'm fairly sure the unlocker is against the EULA, but I also can't really find any definitive answers searching the web thanks to there being so many versions of VMWare. Any insight would be appreciated.
