With the free downloads of osx do I have to do anything special to get them to run

So pretty much the title. I'm thinking setting up a haclintosh for a friend and seeing as the official downloads of the osx are avalible would it be as simple as getting the right hardware and making a bootable media for that os version then pretty much same as buying a disk or would there be other steps I need to do
