| | I'm new to OCLP, and did my first upgrade a couple of days ago. I read / followed the overview at https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/START.html#how-do-i-get-started , then followed the detailed steps starting with https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/INSTALLER.html#downloading-the-installer (then clicking through the linked documents after that). I'd say the documentation is very well-written, but still had a few confusing moments, IMO. My upgrade was to a Macbook Air mid-2013 (6,2). It was officially 'stuck' at MacOS Big Sur 11.7. So I used OCLP 2.4.0 to upgrade it to MacOS Sonoma, 14.7. I downloaded OCLP 2.4.0 to the Mac, then ran it. I then used it to create the MacOS installer USB. I built the USB with both the OCLP EFI boot component and the MacOS Sonoma install component, and applied the upgrade to the laptop. After a LONG period, and several reboots, the system finally rebooted and entered into the new OS; logged in and all was well in MacOS Sonoma. I believe, at that point, I was still required to boot to the USB (if I reboot the computer), so that the OCLP EFI can then boot me into the updated OS on the SSD. I then followed the instructions in the 'Post Installation' section of the documentation, and this is where I got really confused. The documentation says this:
Why does it say 'download OCLP'? - didn't we just do that at the start of the process? Is this for the case of a clean install (I did an in-place upgrade, so OCLP was already present)? And what does 'Build OpenCore again' mean? Didn't I just build OpenCore before the install? Again, is this relevant only if you did a clean install? I think I just re-launched the existing OCLP that I'd downloaded a few hours ago, and then used 'Build and Install OpenCore', this time to the hard drive. I think I then did the reboot, holding 'option', and chose the internal EFI from the following screen: I'm pretty sure I chose the icon on the left (SSD EFI Boot), which then let me choose the 'Macintosh HD', and I again booted into my new MacOS (Sonoma). At that point, I don't recall doing anything more, and I was able to reboot at will, without the USB drive, and all I see on the 'boot screen' is the one local hard drive - 'Macintosh HD'. Looking at the 'Post Installation' document further, it talks about 'booting seamlessly without Boot Picker'. In order to do this, it says "To do this, run the OpenCore Patcher and head to Patcher Settings, then uncheck "Show OpenCore Bootpicker" on the Build tab" (which I did). But then it says "Once you've toggled it off, build your OpenCore EFI once again and install to your desired drive." Here, once again, it's telling me to 'build your OpenCore EFI once again' - which I'm sure I didn't do - and 'Install to your desired drive' - which I'm sure I didn't do - it was already there. What exactly am I being told to do here, and why? Do I need to do yet another rebuild and install step to my SSD? What are the consequences of not doing that? I also used the OCLP menu to 'Post-Install Root Patch', but got 'all applicable patches already installed'. [link] [comments] |
