Vega 64 - Random Freezing

Hey all,

I built myself a new Hackintosh this week, and have been able to get everything to work perfectly, including iMessage – except for some issues with the Vega 64. There's two major issues I've noticed, none of which I've been able to find a solution to on here:

  1. On bootup, one of my monitors is rotated wrong. It's set up to be rotated by 270° in System Preferences, but on reboot, the content of the display is rotated, but it's as if the output is still landscape, if that makes sense. Changing the rotation fixes that. Not really a deal-breaker, since it takes all of 10 seconds to fix, but it would be nice to have this working right.

  2. Sometimes, the GPU will completely stop updating the screen and nothing will bring it back to life, including plugging monitors out and back in (they won't be detected and will not show video). This entire time, the machine is still alive, though: I can hear sounds from iMessage or Mail, and can SSH into it no problem.

There's nothing I've been able to correlate with that second problem. It usually happens after the machine has been on for a while: today, I had it sitting with just the screensaver on, display sleep off, and it froze after about 6 hours, but happily completed a Time Machine backup an hour after the screen froze.

Here's my hardware:

  • Motherboard: GIGABYTE Z390 GAMING X
  • CPU: i7-8700k, overclocked to 4.4GHz
  • GPU: PowerColor Radeon RX VEGA 64 8GB
  • 500GB Samsung 970 Evo NVMe
  • Intel X520-SR1 10GbE adapter
  • Some sort of BCM43xx series card; I don't remember which, but it works just fine for wifi+Bluetooth, including handoff and Unlock with Apple Watch

My kexts folder has the following extensions:

  • AppleALC.kext
  • FakePCIID.kext
  • FakePCIID_Intel_GbX.kext: This is used for my 10GbE card to work with Smalltree drivers
  • FakePCIID_XHCIMux.kext
  • IntelMausiEthernet.kext: On-board Ethernet (I219V)
  • Lilu.kext
  • SMCProcessor.kext
  • SMCSuperIO.kext
  • VegaGraphicsFixup.kext
  • VegaTab_64.kext: Fan fix for Vega
  • VirtualSMC.kext
  • WhateverGreen.kext

I'm at a complete loss at this point how to fix either of those issues, which are the only problems I have left to fix with this machine.
