Can you install Mac OS on a regular MacBook, and then take the hard drive out, put it in a non-Mac laptop, and boot it?

Hard drives should be interchangeable, right? I assume the answer to this question is "no" but I'm still curious.

Also, could you install newer versions of Mac OS on older Mac hard drives this way?
