I did a thing, might turn out to be a stupid thing, but … here goes, bear with me… I needed to replace my 2015 MacBook Retina 15” because it’s getting long in the tooth for my daily use. I don’t agree with Apple as of late when they just bolt down the SSD (Proprietary) and soldered on memory, so a new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and awful butterfly keyboard is out of the question.
Having had an excellent experience with my hachintoshed Intel NUC the past 3 years, I thought: why not do the same for my next laptop? So I bought a build-to-order, made by the largest BTO maker in China: Clevo, and delivered with a Linux flavour OS. Being very recent: It comes with hardware not yet introduced into the Apple eco system (possible stupid thing right here) and I’m having a terrible time getting this thing up and running.
The specs: * 15.6” full HD IPS screen (1920x1080) * Proc: Intel® Core™ i7-8565U (8MB Cache) – quadcore (WhiskeyLake) * RAM: 16GB DDR4 2133 Sodimm (Corsair/Samsung) * Video: Intel UHD graphics 620 * SSD1: NVMe ADATA 512GB ssd * SSD2: SATA3 500GB SSD (Samsung) * 1x Thunderbolt, 1x HDMI, 2x USB 3.0, 1xUSB 2.0 * Replaced the Intel Wifi/BT with a macOS compatible card: Broadcom BCM943602BAED chipset, works automatically. * 1x Realtek RTL811Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Works with correct kext)
I’ve got macOS Mojave 10.14.3 installed on the NVMe SSD with the use of Clover and the needed kexts in EFI/Clover/kexts. I end up with a reasonable working system but with the wrong display prefs. I’m now trying to get video working for the intel 620, but always end up with a working system but no image on screen. I’ve tried Rehabman’s fix for the UHD 620/630 but again no image on screen. I do know that QE/CI is working because “About this Mac” shows the full amount of graphics memory and I got transparency on the dock. (checked this with VNC’ing to my laptop from my NUC)
Next I tried the fix with the backlight control, thinking there might be something on the display but the backlight might be off, again no dice.
Should I wait until someone does a guide for a WhiskeyLake system, someone more knowledgeable, or is there a possibility of success with the current system? Worst case scenario I’ll install Mint Linux or Elementary OS and be done with macOS on a portable.
Extra: Apologies if I still not mentioned all the relevant info. Just ask, I'll post it as soon as I see it.
