getting sound to work on msi x570 tomahawk wifi

AUDIO PORTS (REAR) 5+ Optical S/PDIF (Realtek® ALC1200 Codec)

this is what was given on product page.

if i pick the alcid that allows me to see output being plucked in and adjust volume, all i get is distorted noise when i do a speaker test.

anyone with the same motherboard managed to get audio working, or anyone able to help advise where i maybe doing wrongly/overlooked.
