Some backstory to set the stage:
So last year I built a hackintosh for my brother, who wanted iMac performance at 1/3rd an iMac price, directing me to follow a build he'd seen on youtube. Specs were:
- AMD Ryzen 3600
- Gigabyte X570 I Aorus Pro Wifi motherboard
- Gigabyte Aorus RX570 4GB GPU
- 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200mhz RAM
- Samsung 860 EVO SATA SSD.
OS is Mac Os Mojave, installed Open Core 6.7. (Do not recall specific OS version off the top of my head atm)
The hardware side of things went fine and was a relatively painless build at around 6 hours (I definitely ain't Steve from Gamer's nexus, lol :P). He ended up using an EFI he got from Technolli because he was frustrated at how I'd spent some 4 nights struggling to make a bootable working EFI,
(I know, I know, Technolli bad. It's not my machine, folks, and it wasn't my idea to use Technolli.)
Anyway it worked, and it seemed fine, and he was happy with it. A couple months ago, a Ryzen 5600 came into his hands and so he decided that he'd upgrade to it, sell his 3600, and so he tapped me to do the processor swap (which was executed fairly painlessly).
He told me a couple of days ago that for the last several months now, he's been having audio issues on the hackintosh, where the sound, which used to be crisp and clear, is now coming out garbled. Since I'm the guy who built it for him, I'm now the guy who has to unfuck it for him. Such is my life as the designated IT guy of the family, smh.
I'm wondering whether this might be a conflict issue somewhere, because he had no problems with the Ryzen 3600, and as best as I've worked out the timing, his problems started around the time where he had me upgrade him to the Ryzen 5 5600X.
He thinks this happened after he installed the drivers for his Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 audio interface, but I'm doubtful that's the case, since the problem is there whether the drivers are installed or not. The other possibility to me might be that it's conflicting with the Scarlett 6i6, which provides audio in to the Hackintosh, and audio out, IIRC AMD CPUs have issues with sound in and out.
Since tomorrow is a public holiday, I plan to spend the rest of the day troubleshooting and trying to unfuck his hackintosh - and in the worst case, I guess trying to rebuild the EFI? Which I guess means that I'd have to create the SSDTs myself from windows? Or has the Open Core wiki updated those?
(I should note that the last time I used a Mac, it was from 1998-2000 on my Performa 6200, going from System 7.5 to System 8.0, but such is my life as the designated IT person of my house :V)
