| | We've opened this account just to give some updates every now and then. So, a little backstory.. We're a team of South Korean developers who decided to challenge ourselves. Since the launch of the M1, we've been trying to run macOS Big Sur for ARM on a non-apple CPU. After a very long time, we've managed to develop an emulation layer that sits between the chip and the operating system, that emulates the environment that the M1 has, that means, emulating apple's firmware. It isn't flawless, and there were some things that we still haven't managed to fully emulate, such as the Security Enclave. This is why the system has to be patched while still on an M1 Mac, and only then it can be loaded onto the Surface Pro X. We realize that macOS Big Sur is a bit old now, but it was too difficult to change our patches to work with a newer version of macOS so we stuck with that. It's important to mention that our emulation layer runs independently of Windows for ARM, and not on top of it. Now, after all that work, we did manage to get macOS to boot, but there are still a lot of things that need to be done. The system doesn't have graphics acceleration, and at first it would not even boot without it. Apparently the arm based versions of macOS simply don't have the ability to run without graphics acceleration (If the chip is the cause for that, of course) support from the chip. So we had to patch the system to even boot. The entire process took more than 6 months (Just for the graphics!!), And even though it's far from usable, it's a start. [link] [comments] |
