Your situation with the late 2013 iMac experiencing graphic issues after waking from screensaver or sleep mode on Ventura is intriguing, especially considering the system's otherwise good performance. This issue could be related to the GPU, the RAM, the external SSD, or even the way Ventura handles power management and graphics on older hardware. Here's a guide to help diagnose and potentially resolve the issue:
Guide Step by Step:
Update Software and Drivers: Ensure that Ventura and all drivers (especially graphics) are up to date. Outdated drivers can cause compatibility issues with newer OS versions.
Check Power Management Settings: Ventura might handle power management differently compared to older macOS versions. Check the Energy Saver settings in System Preferences and adjust them to see if it affects the issue.
Monitor Graphics Switching: If your iMac has both integrated and discrete graphics, it might be experiencing issues when switching between them. You can monitor this with tools like gfxCardStatus.
Test RAM: Since you've mixed RAM sticks of different speeds, test the RAM for stability. You can use tools like memtest86 to check for any issues. If possible, revert to the original RAM configuration to see if the problem persists.
External SSD as Boot Drive: Running the OS from an external SSD can sometimes lead to unexpected behavior, particularly with power management and waking from sleep. Try running Ventura from the internal drive to see if the issue is related to the external SSD.
GPU Stress Test: Conduct a stress test on your GPU. Tools like Unigine Heaven can push your GPU to its limits and help identify if there are any underlying hardware issues.
Check for Overheating: Although you've monitored temperatures and they seem normal, it's worth double-checking that the cooling system is working efficiently. Dust buildup or aging thermal paste can impact cooling.
Reset SMC and NVRAM: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and NVRAM can sometimes resolve issues related to power management and graphics. Instructions for this can be found on Apple's support website.
Safe Mode and Diagnostic Test: Boot your iMac in Safe Mode (hold Shift during startup) to see if the issue persists. Also, run Apple Diagnostics to check for any hardware issues.
Reinstall Ventura: If all else fails, consider reinstalling Ventura. Sometimes a fresh install can resolve unexplained glitches.
Create config.plist:
Since you're dealing with a real iMac and not a custom Hackintosh build, modifying a config.plist file isn't applicable in your scenario. This file is specific to Hackintosh systems for configuring how the bootloader interacts with the hardware.
Given the complexity of your situation, particularly with the mixed RAM and use of an external SSD, it may take some trial and error to pinpoint the exact cause of the graphical glitches. If these steps don't resolve the issue, it might be worth considering professional diagnostic support, especially to check the health of your GPU and other hardware components.
Problem going out of screensaver or sleep / imac2013 with Ventura.
After trying different Mac OS with oclp on my 2011 mbp, I went ahead and installed Ventura on my late 2013 imac 27.
Everything went fine, though this time I installed the efi on my bootable Ventura setup volume, and once I was done I installed the efi on the volume containing my Ventura system.
Everything seemed to work fine, computer is rather speedy and fluid, my apps are working.
However, I noticed when I go out of the screensaver or out of sleep, I sometimes end up with graphic issues. Mostly missing docks icons, and once I had severe graphic glitches.
Usually it’s going back to normal if I switch to a light or dark theme, depending on what it was set just before.
I also notice it occurs way more if I choose a modern screensaver, such as the moving Ventura or Monterey theme.
I thought I solved the problem going back to older screensavers, but it also happens sometimes.
I feel it has to do with how intensive I use the Mac.
If I’m just browsing the web, letting the Mac go to sleep and waking up soon after or an hour after I don’t have any issues.
If i just uploaded 500gigs through lightroom, then let it sleep and try to wake, it’s more likely I will have the issue.
I’m a little lost with this, I’m not even sure il searching the web with the correct terms.
I monitor temperature and activity with XRG, nothing seems too crazy to me.
CPU and gpu are around 50 degrees Celsius when idle, they go up if I use the Mac but nothing tremendous, I rarely barely hear the fan, if ever.
What is puzzling me is outside of that issue, the Mac seems to perform really well, maybe even better than mojave, on some tasks.
It feels like a problem with the gpu, but then my guess is it wouldn’t work at all.
My other guess is bad ram, though I never had issue on sierra, high sierra, mojave and Catalina. But i did add sticks from another mbp, that are slower than the initial sticks the imac came with. So the bus is operating at 1333mhz.
Specs are as follows:
3.2ghz intel core i5 GeForce gt755m 1go 12 go ddr3 (2x4 and 2x2) Ventura 13.6.3 installed on a usb 3 external ssd drive (Samsung t5 I think)
Would love to solve the issue, it’s a joy being able to use newer versions of my usual apps.
