Found a MBP Retina 13" e2015 12,1 in the garbage->Optimal macos version?

Im new to macs (except i found one of those semi transparent blue all in fat screen ones, also in the garbage, a decade and a half ago, installed ubuntu on it (after figuring out the that i could connect a standard laptop cd drive to it upside down as the built in one wasnt working) and gave it away to someone who did the garbage can meme with it, worth it :P).

This MBPR 13" i found has the i5 2.7ghz cpu, 8gb ram, 256gb storage and iris 6100 graphics.
The battery capacity is obviously down a bit, it has a small dent on the bottom and the antiglare coating was fragged (which i cleaned off after some searches made this clear to me).

Usecase: Dont know really, most of what i do on my windows comps is browsing, hobby level messing with Blender/3d stuff for games, making/editing avatars, props and objects, as well as Blender/3d stuff for printing and then actually gaming. (I dont expect to be gaming on this old mbp hardware)

I just figure having a laptop might be nice for when im away from home.
But i might gift it to my mom and her guy as they never manage to keep their windows machines running smoothly (i dont understand what they do to make their installs so slow.)

Ive installed Monterey as thats the latest officially supported version but i figure id ask:
is there a more recent and still performant version i should be running for overall usability?
(Newest version is probably more demanding/slow on this decade old hardware and no dont know if i need any of the newer features because i know nothing of mac features.)

Thanks :)

ADDITION: I use an android phone BTW so iphone features/compatibilities are not something i care about.
