Opinions on OS Versions for 2012 MBP.
Image
So I've been chugging along with this elderly 15" 2012 MacBook Pro 9,1 for... uh... well, since 2012. It's been upgraded to about the best I can upgrade it: 16GB RAM, dual 2TB SSDs, new battery, new thermal paste, and so on. It's also the higher-end model with the 2.6Ghz i7 and the full 1GB of GT 650M VRAM. It's my mission-critical machine: I use it for daily tasks, email and web browsing and whatnot, but also for troubleshooting and device setup (I work IT and it goes with me), and even some audio and video editing. It gets used a lot , is what I'm saying. The machine's gone from whatever it originally came with (what was that, Lion?!) to Catalina, and when that was no longer supported but I needed a secure modern OS to continue IT'ing, I used OCLP to carry on with unsanctioned Big Sur, Monterey, and, for the past year, Ventura. All three of the newer OSes with OCLP ran better on this machine than Catalina did. GeekBench benchmarks are even slightly ...
How to setup config.plist of OpenCore Bootloader for a non Mac-OS Environment?
Image
I previously used Clover Boot Manager for emulating an uefi environment on my legacy system. With OpenCore, can I also do the same but without injecting Mac OS specific to SMBIOS ACPI & such?? How would I configure my config.plist so that it is not seen as a Mac? System: Dell Inspiron N5010 Intel Core i3 -370M submitted by /u/R313J283 [link] [comments] [► Source]
🆘 Seeking Assistance: macOS Sequoia Installation Blocked (Mac Pro 5,1 / RX 570)
Image
Hello everyone, I’ve managed to (almost) complete a macOS Sequoia installation on my Mac Pro 5,1 (Mid 2010/2012) using OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) . However, the system is now stuck in the post-installation phase and refuses to boot. All attempts to force the final setup have failed so far. 💻 Key Hardware Specifications Component Details Model Mac Pro 5,1 (Mid 2010/2012) Graphics Card AMD Radeon RX 570 (Non-EFI) Recovery OS macOS High Sierra Target Disk NVMe-2 (via PCIe adapter) — disk3 , APFS Container disk6 Active OCLP Loader EFI on the original installer media ( disk1s1 ) 🛑 Current Issue The Sequoia installer successfully copies all files to the NVMe-2 drive. However, after rebooting for finalization, the system fails to complete setup and automatically falls back to the High Sierra recovery OS . No ethernet using CalDigit TS4 hub on Intel Mac w/ Sequoia 15.7.1
Image
I've got an Intel 15" 2017 MacBookPro OCLP 2.4.1 patched w/ Sequoia 15.7.1 and everything on my CalDigit TS4 dock works fine except ethernet. No matter what I try (reset pram, delete old devices, add networking locations, etc) I can't get macOS to recognize the Thunderbolt Ethernet that the TS4 provides. There's no option in System Settings -> Network -> Add Service to add a Thunderbolt Ethernet Slot X adapter, because that only appears when macOS recognizes connected hardware that can act as a thunderbolt ethernet device. Tested the TS4 on an M4 MacBookPro as well and ethernet there works fine, system report recognizes the Intel I225 networking chip so I know the hardware itself is good. Interestingly the only ethernet adapter my Intel mac sees is my T1 chip? Didn't think that had anything to do with ethernet. ``` Apple T1 Controller: Bus: USB Vendor Name: Apple Inc. Boot picker
Image
Hello, this is just a quick question but why doesn’t the open core boot picker appear in my Mac pro with unflashed gpu no more? It did so before perfectly fine but after an oclp update I think it stopped showing and I don’t see which system is booting nor the Apple logo with the loading bar. The system will boot just fine to Monterey but I would like to fix it in order to be able to select a different system and not removing the physical hard drives. Stuck w/o Boot Picker
Image
I have a Mac 5,1 that I recently installed an AMD 6900xt into and added the Pixlas Mod for the power increase. After doing the upgrade I lost the display screen however I was still able to remote into the computer through screen sharing. I was also able to rarely get the boot picker screen if I held the option key at startup. It didn’t always work I would say 1/4 the time. I have HDMI and DisplayPort Connections and neither work. I was hoping that adding OCLP to the machine and updating to Tahoe would fix this issue. I downloaded the program and installed Open Core onto the computer. I had OCLP download and install the EFI and Tahoe onto a clean USB stick. When I restarted the computer I didn’t get the boot picker screen and tried a number of restarts to no avail. I also found that if I didn’t hold the option key on boot the Mac would shutdown about 1-2 minutes after being turned on. I tried using the arrow keys on the keyboard and blindly selecting in the right order the update file...
HELP: Are those specs enough for MacOC 14.6 Sonoma?
Image
Hi everyone, I'm new here and I need some suggestions. I would like to use Final Cut Pro 11 (for the Magnetic Mask feature), so I would need the macOS 14.6. Will it work with the specs shown in the image above? Will it freeze? Would I be better off to keep my actual version? Actually, I run with no problem Final Cut Pro X and Blender, and those with Google chrome will be the only programs that I'll run on this iMac. Moreover, I have some additional doubts: Would I need to do a backup of all my files before the update, or will they be kept on the Mac? If the Mac will not work properly, is it easy to go back to macOS 10.15.7? submitted by /u/Upper_Steak243 [link] [comments] [► Source]

Video playback freezes or fails after seeking (QuickLook error -101, VLC hangs) — Intel UHD 620, macOS Monterey Hackintosh
Image
Hi everyone, I’m new to Hackintosh and currently running macOS Monterey 12.7.4 on a Dell laptop (inspiron 15 3576) with an Intel Core i5-8250U, Intel UHD Graphics 620, and an dGPU AMD Radeon 520 that I’ve disabled using -wegnoegpu. Everything works quite well overall, but I’m having a strange issue with local video playback. When I play videos using VLC, they work fine if I just let them run from the start. But if I try to seek or skip to another part of the video, it immediately freezes and won’t continue. QuickLook can’t open video files either. It shows an error message saying “The document could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-101).” When I try to play the same video over IINA, it only shows a single still frame, like a frozen YouTube video that never resumes. However, streaming videos online on Safari works completely fine. I can seek or skip through them with no problem at all. I also noticed that when playing videos locally, the GPU usage barely moves. It’s...
Bluetooth: Sonoma - It was working, now it isn't. Will turn on, then turn off?

About a month ago I updated to Sonoma and Bluetooth was working without issue. Yesterday, when I went to connect a device, Bluetooth was off. I turned it on and after a few moments it turned itself off again. I needed to use OpenCore Patcher to get my Wifi running, so perhaps that is why? I have AirportBrcmFixup.txt, IO80211FamilyLegacy. MacOS version recommendation Intel CPU
Image
Hi, I bought a used 2020 MacBook Pro with the following config: I7 2.3Ghz 32 GB Ram 1Tb Disk From what I've read, this is the last MacBook Pro with an Intel Chip. The OS installed was macOS 10.15 Catalina. I was concerned about security and performance, and some apps refused to install, so I upgraded it manually to Montrey 12.7.6. I saw that the latest Safari version for Monterey was released on December 19, 2023. To have a newer version, I would need to upgrade it at least to Sonoma, which would allow a Safari from May 12, 2025. What I'm running at the moment is: Safari DXO Photolabs (alternative to Adobe) Bambu Studio (3d printing software) Fusion 360 (3d software tool) My question to all the macOS experts is, will I see a performance drop if I upgrade from Monterey to Sonoma? What about Sequoia? I see no point in asking for Takoe, since that is not in the plans, and it seems to be more directed to Apple M architecture. submitted by /u/technoki...

Suddenly 2015 Mac Laggy fans screaming CPU HIGH
Image
2015 MacBoookPro 2.8Ghz quad core suddenly as laggy as hell! Almost unresponsive and has to force quit all apps due to its inability to keep up. The GPU usage can drop down and temperature appears to be low but the fans are continuously screaming and it is so slow out of nowhere. Mac is hot to the touch so hard to believe the temperature reading. Its running sequoia 15,2 and the older istat menu which might be playing up. Would switching firmware throttling off help. I am a noob. Hoping to get 2 more years out of this mac if possible. So any suggestions would be very very appreciated. I have done heaps of searches in the subreddit and in google but as we all know the search function on reddit can be quite bad at narrowing down a relevant post. submitted by /u/UpMarketPeasant [link] [comments] [► Source]

Help with 2012 13 inch MBP
Image
Guys, idk which OS I should put on it. I was using sequoia till recently and it was pretty much smooth and running all the apps with no problems But with sequoia, the mac takes at least 5-6 minutes to boot every time I turn the computer on or restart it. It has a 500gb SSD and 16gb of ram. I was thinking about putting Big Sur or Monterey… Or maybe just live with Catalina and its limitations at this point… submitted by /u/Itchy_Cod_4087 [link] [comments] [► Source]

Should I just go with a slightly older version like Big Sur or Monterey?
Image
I've had issues with Ventura and Sonoma being on my 2012 Mac Mini and personally i only use it for some light use, because I have a newer PC I use.. but will installing the oldest OCLP macOS version make it faster than how Ventua & Sonoma were? As you can see I'm back on 10.15.7 Catalina which runs very well but I was thinking about going with Big Sur (mostly) or Monterey. What do yall think..? Or if anyone knows what is the BEST macOS to install on this i would appreciate it. submitted by /u/Dorbio-Official [link] [comments] [► Source]

Issue with (2) Mac Pro 5,1 | No video display after installation of a based debian OS
Image
Hi, i have 2 Mac Pro 5,1 Mid 2011-2012 and tried to install proxmox (vme for services for servers). Now none of them give video, tried all the solutions that apple gives: Command + r on boot Command shit + r on boot SMC reboot Diag led -> No problem with gpu etc, etc... None of them work. I think i re-writed grub/efi or something similar and this is why now it doesnt give video. I have no actual idea on how to solve this problem. Doesnt look like a hardware problem, they worked perfecly before i try to install a debian based OS. How can i try to solve this problem? I thought about getting a empty ssd/hdd with no data written on it then try to boot it up with booteable pen + a stable MacOS or similar. Need help with this spent a lil more money on my homelab and i cant afford right now a tech service i need to make it my self with some help. Any ideas on how to fix this issue? Hello! I don’t know if this will be of any help but I was wondering if anyone would know where I might’ve gone wrong here. I thought I had done all the right steps to get (i think?) Camera stopped working after post install root patching

My built in camera stops working after OCLP post install root patching. If I undo the root patching, the camera starts working. FaceTime --No Video PhotoBooth - There is no camera connected. Green light next to camera does not turn on. I have been using OCLP for many years on many of my MacBooks. This is first time i have seen this. This is: MacBook Pro 2011, 17inch, A1297, MacBook 8,3, Monterey 12.7.6 12GB Ram, 240GB SSD, AMD HD Radeon 6750M non-metal. This is fresh install. Only installed FireFox so far. I had same issue on Catalina where I was using dosdude1 patcher. I thought this will go away if i use OCLP.
