Suggestions for a machine that has a screen like a retina display and that I can turn into a hackintosh?

My mother has a 2012 MacBook Pro, which is still going strong after a friend and I doubled the ram and put an SSD in. However, the machine is starting to slow, and my mother, being an amateur photographer, is desperate for a modern, retina-style screen. She still wants a laptop, though, so I can't just get a cheap desktop with a good monitor.

I've considered going the hackintosh route, but I'm not sure I should, given I'm not always around to troubleshoot the random problems such a setup may have. Still, it's worth looking into. To that end, what laptops do people recommend which would have a resolution and accuracy that's close to a retina display? Would there be any compatibility troubles, where macOS would fail to use the right resolution, thus rendering the high-quality screen pointless? Basically, is there a compatible machine out there with the kind of display, and is it worth doing this instead of getting a 2019 Air for a lot more money? Thanks for your thoughts.
