MacPro 5,1 Monterey

So... I just spent the whole week messing around with different settings to try to get Monterey installed on my MacPro5,1. I was updating a years-old configuration on Mojave: all of the components had been functioning perfectly in mojave prior to my updgrade.

At each step of the troubleshooting process, I would get a new error, but the big repeat issues were the "forbidden symbol" and the "this version of macos is not supported on this platform" errors.

As I was researching this, I saw lots of blaming "did you hold the option key on startup, dummy?" and "it's impossible unless you swap your flashed video card and unflashed video card during the upgrade process!" (both of which are incorrect)

even the official documentation made reference to the incorrect problem; for example, that the usb drive was faulty.

for me, the problem was a faulty samsung 870 QVO disk drive. if i installed to a spinning disk drive, everything was perfect. but if I tried to install onto my ssd, it would always error out. it was obvious that the ssd was faulty when i tried to update the firmware and it errored out in every possible configuration (inside a desktop, in an enclosure, in a drive dock, both in macos and windows).

what i ended up doing was configuring my device on a spinning rust disk and then using the new version of clonezilla (which supports apfs) to clone the working drive.

i was never able to upgrade the firmware on my ssd, but I think i might have a little bit of a warranty on it, so i will try to RMA it.

i'll try to keep an eye on this thread in case anyone has any issues
