First time success!

Stumbled upon the Hackintosh realm by accident earlier this week while searching for how to set up a macOS VM. I figured it would be a fun project to play around with while I'm on concussion recovery and gave it a shot. Dusted off the ol' engineering workstation from 2013 and got to work. Here's the specs:

  • macOS: Sonoma 14.3.1
  • CPU: Intel i7-4770K
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 660
  • RAM: 32 GB DDR3 SDRAM
  • Storage: 500GB Samsung 850 EVO (split 50/50 w/ Windows 10)
  • Motherboard Model: ASRock Z87 Extreme4
  • Audio Codec: RealTek ALC1150
  • Ethernet Card: Intel I217-V
  • Monitors: LG 34" flat panel, Samsung 27" curved
  • Keyboard: Razer Ornata V3 X

What's good: Out of the box, it is ready to put in work. I spent more time making it cute and setting accent colors to pink than I did fixing post-install issues. Imported a few apps for school and immediately started using it as normal. I'm actually using it more than Windows! No issues that hinder me from doing what I need to do.

Issues:

  1. Audio: I just realized the machine doesn't recognize my external speakers. It does recognize my SteelSeries headset (wired) for both game/chat. I'll get to this eventually.
  2. Graphics: Intermittent glitching that causes larges areas of the screen(s) to become heavily pixelated. It may happen on one or both, with severity differentiating between them. I have a suspicion it may be 3D rendering related, but it has also occurred in web browsers, and static system menus randomly. I've only had the machine for less than 24 hours, so I'll investigate further. I have yet to see anyone post a video/screenshot of my same scenario, so I plan to rule out hardware issues first
  3. Razer Keyboard: There does not seem to be any support for Razer Chroma on mac. I have tried the official V2 Synapse program and it does not work. Razer-macos on github also does not recognize my device (it is supported), despite the OS correctly identifying it as a Razer Ornata.

Good luck to anyone starting their journey. If a half-awake toddler mom with a brain injury can do it, so can you!
