I have a mid 2014 MBP with 500 GB SSD running latest native OS Mac Big Sur. I am using a 1 TB external HDD formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for my Time Machine that I have been using since prior older Mac OS. I want to be able to migrate all of my Time Machine data back to my machine after I upgrade to OCLP MacOS Sonoma.
Since Big Sur on my machine is formatted APFS and Sonoma is also APFS, should I have my Time Machine HDD formatted as APFS also instead of Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? BUT, isn't APFS mostly designed for SSDs and not HDDs? Will formatting an HDD as APFS cause problems with it? I would like to use this 1TB HDD as Time Machine volume if at all possible so I don't have to go out and buy a 1TB SSD.
After I figure out the answer to the above questions, will a Time Machine backup from my Big Sur be able to migrate no problem to my new Sonoma install or is that too big of a jump for Time Machine to jump 3 MacOS versions?
