How can I update a 5,1 from Monterey to Sequoia?

I previously tried to upgrade from Monterey to Sonoma. The Sonoma install went fine, but when prompted to migrate data from a Time Machine backup, the result was a black screen boot loop.

Someone mentioned that I needed to revert the root patches, which I did when booted into Monterey. But there’s no message asking which root patches I wanted to revert, just that they were reverted. I’m assuming they were reverted from the Monterey that I was booted into?

Now when I install Sequoia and migrate from a Time Machine backup, will those root patches still be there and cause the same issue?

How else can I migrate the data without the problematic root patches that will cause and endless boot loop?

Is there some kind of terminal command I can run while booted from the USB thumb drive?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as the “revert root patches” process is very confusing.
