Just posting just in case anyone else has the same problem.
Problem: can't download Sierra from the App Store. Solution: edit SMBIOS to get from 4,1 to 5,1
notes: had to edit folder rights to read/write to edit. had to re-enter the personal payment info as it saw a new computer.
