So as you saw in the title, I needed a cheap windows box for basics tasks at work. The computers available at work are all ancient core2duo machines that are so slow you want to pull your hair out. I'd rather spend a bit bit of my own money for a lot less aggravation. Found a seller on ebay who had a bunch of these 600 G1 SFFs for sale with the HDDs removed for $80. Seemed like a decent deal so I snagged one. The listing stated these came with i5-4570 CPUs, but when powered mine on I was pleasantly surprised that it had a i5-4590. Its only a 100MHZ difference between the two, so nothing life changing, but not going to complain either. Also picked up a $35 480GB SSD for the Windows volume and a $10 120GB for macOS. Installing macOS on this system was pretty painless. I basically took the EFI folder off my daily driver and reconfigured it for this system. Anyone looking to install macOS on a similar ProDesk, just follow u/corpnewt's Mojave vanilla guide and should be fine. As far as functionality, the OS feels snappy, sleep works, surfs the web fine. No handoff or continuity as its on ethernet right now, but I have a BCM94350ZAE on the way. I don't think I have speedstep working correctly, so I have to look into that. [link] [comments] |
