Intermittent audio volume changing lag

Ever since upgrading to Mojave I've been having trouble with changing the volume. More often than not when I try to turn up or down the volume there's a lag of about 20-30 seconds before the volume changer overlay appears and the volume suddenly changes to whatever amount I pressed the buttons for. The volume does immediately change to the first or second of the button presses, but the rest of them have the mentioned lag.

I'm using an Apogee Symphony I/O audio interface, with the newest drivers and firmware, and it seems like I've tried everything — I've reinstalled the audio drivers multiple times as well as cleared out the .plist-files in MacHD/Library/Preferences/Audio, I've updated all of my kexts and double checked my config.plist, and I've cleared the NVRAM... but nothing works. I've used the same setup on High Sierra for years with no hitches, so I'm guessing it has something to do with Mojave.

I'm on a Gigabyte GA-Z270X Ultra Gaming, i7700k, AMD RX580, with a vanilla install (Clover). The audio interface is connected through a Symphony 64 PCIe-card, which again worked great on High Sierra.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the cause of this?
