After several weeks of tweaks and tests, am ready to say this project is done. It's been a very interesting, at times difficult, but ultimately rewarding process, the transition from a decade-old Mavericks/i5-750/p55 setup to Opencore/Big Sur. Installation was based solely on the Dortania guide, which required multiple readings, particularly the post-install guide and OC reference manual. Starting with the USB installer, first problem was creating the installer on Windows 10. Decided to just start with Catalina and OC 0.7. On install, ran into an issue with no ethernet at the Catalina install screen, dropped into terminal and used ifconfig en0 media 1000baseT to configure then finished installation. Once in the finder, updated right to Big Sur. Next step was to fix the igpu for hardware acceleration, done by adding a layout-id to DeviceProperties. Built the usb map with USBmap, took multiple attempts before finally understanding how to use the dummy kext to track down the internal hubs and MB rgb controller (great explanation here). Fixed sleep by going through the post-install guide line-by-line and mapping and adding SSDT-SBUS-MCHC. Last hurdle was a strange system pause when playing multimedia on VLC. Fixed by reviewing the whatevergreen docs again and adding shikigva=40 to DeviceProperties for the gpu. Have since moved to OC 0.72 release, 11.5.1 and added opencanopy, filevault and boot camp. So far, everything works - imessage, facetime, sleep, BT. Next steps will be to overclock the CPU, seeing how I can fix RGB for the RAM within OSX and hopefully finding an AMD GPU at a reasonable price.
