Am I able to install hackintosh on an external usb drive?

As the title says. I have looked around and my hardware seems to be good for hackintosh. The reason I ask is because I have something to do on Xcode and I don’t have access to a real mac, in addition I already have a Linux and windows partition dualbooted on my machine and I really don’t want to touch my main drive. I’ve googled and I don’t see much reguarding macOS/hackintosh running entirely off a usb drive or external hard drive. I would prefer if I can get a complete is installation as opposed to a live one or a ram disk.
