Best OS for mid-2012 MacBook Pro (unibody)?

I have a mid 2012 non-retina Macbook Pro, currently running High Sierra. It's been upgraded to a solid-state drive and has 10GB of RAM. Given everything is dropping support for 10.13 and 10.14 (Steam, Discord, etc) I've been looking into getting a more recent OS. Any suggestions, recommendations, tips? My machine runs fine, I can play the Sims 4 no problem and day-to-day use is a breeze, unless I'm exporting a really large recording in Garageband or the like it has no issues.

What version would you recommend I install? I don't need anything fancy, I just need it to be at least moderately supported by apps and platforms, and hopefully not be much slower than when I'm running High Sierra. I'd rather something I can install and mostly forget about than something that would make me have to run around and fix issues. This has been my day-to-day computer for over a decade now, and I don't have the money for a new one, so I don't want anything with a high risk of putting my machine out of commission while I'm in college. Thanks!
