Hello all, new to the subreddit and new to the world of Mac. I've recently acquired a MacBook Pro (2012 - A1286 model) and am having issues with loading games on the thing. I understand that the Mac in and of itself is old and isn't expected to do much in terms of horsepower but I'd love to get some older 2d/3d games running on the thing if possible.
I've run through the process of installing Open Core Legacy Patcher and downloading/installing Monterey on the device. I had no issues doing so and the OS as a whole runs generally smoothly (issues with slow animation times when I minimize windows) but I can't seem to get League of Legends running/Steam games to properly run. League will boot into the launcher and then I get "Could Not Initialize Graphics Device" after I get through champion selection to actually get in game. Steam will launch, but it opens 6 windows. When I get to the library the screen is half black (literally half the window is black and the bottom half I can see some of the games and text), I can click on big picture mode and that works but I when I get around to actually loading a game it's abysmal performance and load times.
I've done some digging and it seems that League would be able to run on Monterey and it should be fine loading onto this hardware but it simply won't. And the games I'm trying to run on Steam are simple 2d games that run fine on much lower end hardware but not on mine.
I have installed a new SSD(500Gb WD Blue), cleaned the system and slapped on a new coat of thermal paste. The only thing I haven't upgraded yet is the ram which I'm still sitting at 4gb on this MacBook. I understand that is low for todays standards but I could totally get these things to run on a Windows spec'd equivalent laptop. I'm not expecting other worldly performance but I'd like to simply get these things to run.
I've ran root patches through Open Core a few times to make sure they "stick" but that didn't seem to do too much.
I'm at a loss, there's not much information I can find on "Could Not Initialize Graphics Device" on this MacBook Pro 2012 A1286 and League of Legends or on the Steam window issue.
Should I be upgrading all the way to Sonoma or should I take her back to Big Sur or something? Can I simply not run any games on the device at all? Is there a work around with Open Core for the graphics initialize error that I'm receiving?
Any and all help is appreciated genuinely. I will provide any other information/images if you so need them to help. Thank you!
