Apple would prefer that I binned my 2017 Macbook Air and bought a new machine just because they've arbitrarily decided it's too old to run a more up to date OS and, as per usual, it falls to the enthusiast community to show how wrong they are.

If you've got an old Mac and you're not ready to reach into your pockets to pay Apple still more money, you should definitely go this route. All you need is a USB memory stick and some time. You don't even need to be that technical, the installation is super-easy.
