Easier to start from scratch or convert/upgrade guts from 2006 Macbook Pro?

My wife has a 2006 Macbook Pro that is on it's last legs. I've been looking into to hackintoshes for a while and I was curious if it was possible and/or beneficial to reuse the guts of the macbook pro in a new enclosure. I just want a desktop for everyday use, web browsing, word docs, music, etc.
